Alke Schmidt

Alke’s art practice is an ongoing exploration of the subversive potential of art’s aesthetic dimension. A mixed media artist working mainly with painting, textiles, thread and collage, she creates seductively beautiful paintings to convey challenging themes that centre around social and environmental justice. Her most recent project was inspired by the financial crisis; past themes included climate change, the erosion of human rights in the “war on terror”, fast food, and cultural politics in her local Borough. Alke shows with the Signal Gallery, London, as well as undertaking independent projects with galleries, curators and non-art organizations and has work in public and private collections in Europe, the U.S. and Australia. She lives and works in London.
